How is quality measured?
SSIM over 8×8 windows, computed on luma and both chroma planes, with the
worst 1% of windows weighted in so a single mangled patch of text cannot
hide inside a good average. RGB under fully transparent pixels is ignored,
because encoders legitimately rewrite it and nobody can see it.
Each candidate is encoded, decoded again and scored against your original.
The quality number a format reports for itself is never trusted — that is the
whole reason a stock canvas.toBlob at 75% loses to this by 30–90%
on most photographs.
